Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can present with these common symptoms felt in the wrist, hand and/or fingers including:
- Weakness to the hand
- Pins and needles sensations
- Shooting, traveling sensations
- Severe, piercing pain in the hands
Carpal Tunnel Causes
Within the carpal tunnel there are lots of structures including muscles, blood vessels, tendons and other structures all compacted in a small area. If one of the structures becomes inflamed, which may come from overuse, it can compress the median nerve and cause the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Repetitive tasks such as typing, using a computer mouse, using your phone or other regular actions can cause overuse which may lead to carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. In today’s society where devices are glued to our hands, these symptoms are becoming more and more common.
Arthritis sufferers and pregnant women are also at a higher risk of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Carpal Tunnel Treatment
There are a number of natural treatment options we can suggest including:
- Carpal Tunnel Exercises – specific stretches can be prescribed by your Osteopath to suit your individual situation
- Rest – a period of rest from the motion causing the pain can help to alleviate the discomfort
