There’s been widespread interest in standing desks in recent years, it’s seen as trendy even to stand rather than sit over your computer.
What no one talks about is the negative impact that a standing desk could have on your health.
1. You’re still stationary
One of the main concerns of sitting all day is that you’re stationary for extended periods. Transferring to a standing desk means that you’re still stationary for long periods of time, you’re simply standing instead of sitting. Your work day is still void of vital body movement.
2. Feet, Ankle and Leg Strain
Being stationary on your feet all day puts immense pressure on your feet and ankles. If you’re standing still for extended periods, you’re not circulating the blood through your legs and feet, increasing the risk of varicose veins, swollen joints and other hazardous conditions.
3. Neck Strain
Standing over a desk will place strain on your neck in a similar way to sitting, as your neck will be held in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
4. Shoulder Strain
When sitting you have the opportunity to rest your arms and shoulders to give them a break. This luxury does not exist when you’re standing and there’s a real risk of straining your shoulders when standing for long periods.
5. Postural Strain
Standing in the same, still position for a long period of time could cause strains throughout your body due to the posture that you hold. You could pick up bad “standing” habits, leading to everything from lower back pain to tension headaches.
A standing desk would need to be able to be adjusted to the exact height of the user to prevent further problems.
So if sitting all day is hazardous, and standing poses similar problems then what’s the solution? Aim to move more through the day to reduce the risks from being stationary for too long.
